Triple-Champion walks through track and pits

Cecilia Braekhus makes the switch to Motorsports - at least this was the case for one day. The current WBC-, WBA- and WBO- Welterweight World Champion followed an invitation by the Mercedes-Benz racing team to join them for a DTM (German Touringcar Championship) race. This was a pleasant change of scenery for the queen of boxing who traded the boxing ring for the German racetrack Lausitzring. But the "First Lady" didn't just sit in the stands to watch the race. She also went on a tour through the backstage area and the pits. But the real highlight came at the end of the race. The boxer handed over the trophy to second placed Mercedes-Benz driver Garry Paffett. "I was so nervous when I gave him the price, there were over 50.000 people watching," said the Norwegian. "I would have been calmer if I had been boxing."

The Welterweight Champion is a true fan of the DTM racing series. Especially the incredible speed and the seemingly never ending action are aspects the 30-year-old is very keen on. "It is just so impressive how the crew manages to change the tires of the cars within just a few seconds." She also saw some similarities between boxing and motorsports. "Both, drivers as well as boxers, need to keep up a huge amount of concentration for the whole duration of a fight or race," said Braekhus. "Both sports deliver a lot of action and excitement to the fans, as they never know what will happen next."

Braekhus herself believes that she would have made a decent racing driver. "I just love the speed and the exhilaration of the sport. I definitely would have enjoyed myself," she said after the race. "But right now the only thing on my mind is to defend my titles." And her next defense is already on the cards. On June 2 she will face off with Jessica Balogun from Germany in the Danish city of Herning.
