Due to his young age, you can safely say that Marco Huck still has the majority of his career as a professional boxer before him, yet success appears to be something he has naturally. This is mainly due to the battling attitude of the 24-year-old. “I am a fighter. Only winning counts for me. Therefore, I always aim to give it my best and win my fights,” he said.

The cruiserweight showed from an early age how capable he was of setting high standards. “I moved to Germany when I was eight with my mother Bisera and my father Rasim. I grew up in Bielefeld and trained with Ulf Schmidt to be a kickboxer,” said Huck looking back. His participation in that sport was crowned by winning the World Championships in full contact.Huck was not only the first title winner from the German men’s team in a decade, but with his sensational points win in the final in Paris in October 2003, the 18-year-old kickboxer also became the youngest German World Champion of all time.

He then transferred to boxing. “I made 15 fights for BV Vorwärts Bielefeld and won all of them. That got people in the professional spheres looking at me,” he recalled. “Then it all went quite quickly. I did a trial with coach Ulli Wegner and convinced him. Then I received an offer for a professional contract.”

Marco Huck’s debut as a professional boxer was on November 7, 2004 in Nuremberg. He soon saw off the Czech Republic’s Pavel Cirok and won with a technical knockout in the first round. Victory followed victory until December 29, 2007. That was the day Huck had to accept defeat to the USA’s Steve Cunningham in a fight for the IBF World Championship in Cruiserweight. Yet that first defeat in his 20th fight did not stop Huck from being given a standing ovation by the fans inside the Seidensticker Halle in Bielefeld. That was due to the heart the Cruiserweight boxer from East Westphalia had shown in the ring. Huck took the defeat like a man and promised “I’ll be back!” Huck rebounded with a TKO victory over Frantisek Kasanic to clinch the IBF Intercontinental title in May 2008 before stopping European champion Jean Marc Monrose in the 12th round of their meeting in Bielefeld. “I am glad I could reassure my home fans with a strong performance,” said Huck, who has knocked out Fabio Tuiach and Geoffrey Batello since then.

Huck still has definite aims. “I am still young and can still learn a hell of a lot. But I have no fear in the ring and, therefore, I want to fight against the best boxers of my weight division and become World Champion,” he said. Huck is somebody who likes to be challenged. “The strains that a boxer has to deal with in training fit in with my temperament. That is why I feel at home when boxing,” added Huck.

That is particularly evident in his fighting style. “I am not the kind of person who likes to rely on the referee’s decision. I would prefer to win the fight early,” he said. This has got to be one of the reasons why he is such an attraction to boxing fans. “My reward comes at the end of the fight when the referee lifts my arm and announces me as the winner – that is simply an indescribable feeling,” he explained.

While Huck often looks dominant in the boxing ring, he is rather more conservative in his private life. But the impression lies. He is actually a man who takes time to consider things before passing judgement. “When I have constructed my opinion, then I stand by it. What moves my heart is always on the tip of my tongue, but I always show the necessary respect first,” he said.

The most important thing in a sportsman’s life is the family. The reason for this, according to Marco Huck, is the way his parents brought him up. “My mother and my father always took good care of me and my brothers and sisters. I have one brother (Kenan) and two sisters (Munevra and Muamera). We all help each other out a lot and it is important to me that we are all doing fine, explained Huck.”
